Goodies to come ...

I found some wonderful old magazines in the corner of an antique store in Mahone Bay, only about 10 minutes away from my home on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. These are really wonderful: fashion, shelter and hobby magazines from 1937 to 1955. I bought a whole stack, so expect to see them incorporated in my artwork shortly!

I love new inspiration ...

Speaking of inspiration, can I just draw your attention to the work of Jesse Utt, another wonderful Etsy artist. His watercolour/acrylic paintings combine a delicately bravuro technique with distinctly off-centre subjects. This is one of my very favourites:

Whatever happened to Baby Jane? Eh?

Okay, I've immersed myself in WHTBJ for the last couple of days -- what a great film it is. Yeah, it's slightly shlocky horror, but, my lord, what performances ... Love it to pieces now, but it totally freaked me out as a little kid.

(As an aside, does anyone know the "Whatever Happened to Baby Dawn" parody that French and Saunders did? It's one of their best bits, and they had a lot of very good ones ... I couldn't watch Davis in the real thing without being reminded of French's spot on impersonation)

So, of course, it's all leaking out in the new art I'm doing. Here's a piece ... featuring the young Miss Davis.

And here's one with the young Miss Crawford ... She must have been one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood -- that bone structure is perfection.

Of course, they're both for sale at my Etsy Store (shameless plug) ...

A long time away ...

Well, I guess my life ate me, or something, because it's been weeks since I last posted, and more weeks before that since I created any visual art. Life has been hectic, for sure. I just found out that my two aged pussy cats, Bhima and Messalina, are more ill than I thought. Bhima is in the early stages of kidney failure, and Messy is mildly diabetic. All of a sudden, needles are a big part of our lives -- insulin for Mess and sub cutaneous fluid for the Bhimster. Fun and games! But they're responding well (and quickly) to it, so that's the important thing.

I did my first collages in almost two months last night -- it felt so damned good. And I have a heap of wonderful old magazines from the 40s and 50s, so I can't wait to get started ripping those to pieces ... But here's Picture Tubes -- a collision between overpainted printed matter, a rather gaudy bird and technical diagram and text from a Televison Repair Manual circa 1953!
